*In the representation of sex crimes, the blue box, which symbolizes males, is assigned a value of 1. For instance, looking at the row named Asian, a pink box marked as 4x, indicates that black females are four times more likely to experience sex crimes compared to black males. (Vice versa for crimes involving weapons, the pink box, which symbolizes females, is assigned a value of 1.)
Which types of crimes exhibit the most significant differences based on the victim’s sex and demographic groups?
- I specifically selected sex crimes and crimes involving weapons because they demonstrate the most distinct disparities between males and females across all demographic groups.
- The demographic groups are listed in order from the most frequent occurrence of sex crimes for females to the least frequent (on the left), and from the most frequent occurrence of crimes involving weapons for males to the least frequent (on the right).
- The chart is created based on the comparison of probabilities, which were calculated based on types of crimes with the factors of victim’s sex and demographic groups. For example:
- Black females are more than twice as likely to face sex crimes compared to White females.
- Native males are 1.5 times more likely to face crimes involving weapons compared to Black males.
Overall
The average age for victims ranged from late 20s to late 30s, with the average age for sex crime victims being the lowest for both males and females. The oldest victims were those of crimes involving weapons.
Depending on the victim’s sex and demographics, the likelihood of facing different types of crimes varies. However, regardless of their sex and demographic groups, property crimes are the most common.
Specifically, Native males have a probability close to 0.8 for property crimes, the highest probability among all groups.
Overall, females are more likely to face sex crimes compared to males, while males are more likely to face crimes involving weapons compared to females.
